Michael Maher is currently a freelance photographer and former newspaper photojournalist with the Lowell (Ma.) Sun, where he was twice named New England Newspaper Photographer of the Year. He has won numerous photojournalism awards from the National Press Photographers’ Association, Associated Press, Boston Press Photographers’ Association, and New England Press Association. His photographs have been published by major news wire services, newspapers, and photography books. His photographs also appeared in an HBO special, “Curse of the Bambino”, a history of the Boston Red Sox.
Michael began his news photography career at Boston University (BU), where he graduated with a B. S. in Journalism. He subsequently worked as a full-time newspaper photojournalist for the Lowell (Ma) Sun, until leaving to become a freelance photographer.
While freelancing, he received an advanced degree from Columbia University -- a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) and concentration in Journalism Management (newspaper, magazine and television). Michael also pursued a career in advertising while continuing to work as a freelance photographer, and currently serves as Senior Vice President of Marketing at Digitas Health, the industry's top healthcare digital marketing and advertising agency.
Michael has photographed the full range of news events from professional sports to local little league, U. S. presidential candidates to local school board races, international celebrities to local garden clubs, major news events to minor car accidents.
